Happily skeptical of Systems

One of Simone de Beauvoir’s funniest lines is in The Prime of Life where she shades elitist philosophers for their obsession with creating a “lunacy known as a ‘philosophical system’.” This was why she resisted the label of ‘philosopher’ and was more interested in living attitudes and practical solutions. My friend Massimo Pigliucci’s excellent new book How to Be a (Happy) Skeptic: The Power of Doubt in a Meaningful Life—Lessons from Cicero’s Philosophy starts with a similar premise and links it back to the ancient Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero – a member of the Skeptical Academy in Athens in 387 BCE and Pigliucci’s main philosophical guide through the book.
